March 2008
I can't believe it is already March. Flu season is peaking late this year. In 49 states the CDC is reporting wide spread cases of influenza. They are also suggesting that the public still get vaccinated if they haven't already. Don't forget hand washing is a great defense against the spread of germs. In our neighborhood we have had so many children sick that I have taken out my hand towel in the restroom and I have replaced it with a roll of paper towels. I am hoping that this to will help stop the spread of germs.
This past week I was in Atlanta when the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted to recommend all children from the age of 6 months up to 18 years old get the influenza vaccine. I have to tell you that I was very excited that the vote went the way it did. Vaccination is the number one way to help prevent the spread of the flu. I have heard from parents concerned about the thimerosal in the flu vaccines. If you are worried about your child getting vaccinated with a vaccine that may have traces of thimerosal in it, talk with your health care provider about thimerosal free alternatives. A nasal mist vaccine is one option and some providers carry thimerosal free vaccines.
We have already had 22 children die this flu season from this vaccine preventable disease. I pray that the number will not rise. I fear that it will.
Please remember that nobody knows your child better than you do. Follow your instincts!!
Stay happy and healthy,
